马克德·默克佣兵团来自特罗纳里。十五年前，Leofric Vongeist以一支名为沃恩盖斯特先锋团的小队为基础，创建了这一组织。在特罗纳里时，佣兵团由多支连队组成，积极承接各种佣兵合同。Dale 和 Janeen、珍中尉等许多佣兵都是在团内长大，或在创立初期加入的。一次尤其惨烈的对兽人合同令他们失去了整支骑兵连；为了争取时间重建，Leofric 接下一份前往霜雪边境的现役合同。佣兵团招募了一批新兵，随后启程前往霜雪边境。

《堕落冠军 II》开始时，Leofric 已经神秘离去，把佣兵们丢给 Jen 指挥了数周。此时佣兵团彻底身无分文，年轻而野心勃勃的佣兵数量也已超过大多数老兵；于是他们打着帮助 Jen 寻找 Leofric 的旗号，基本沦落为了强盗。玩家最初会作为一名遇劫受害者与马克德·默克佣兵团敌对，随后先后面对 Jen 与 Leofric。最终一战结束后，玩家将决定佣兵团的命运：这个派系究竟能否熬过重重困境、获得新生，还是会被席卷而来的腐化浪潮吞没。

佣兵们曾坚持更名，希望新名字别再总围着 Leofric 打转。结果他反而把组织改名为“马克德·默克佣兵团”，以呼应自己布满印记的身体。作为妥协，佣兵们便复制了他身上一个不那么显眼的纹身，将其作为标志佩戴在护甲上。

Completely out of money and with most of the older soldiers now outnumbered by the younger and more ambitious mercenaries, the Marked Merk Mercenaries have largely resorted to banditry under the guise of aiding Jen's search for Leofric. The player will initially start hostile to the Marked Merk Mercenaries as an attempted robbery victim, leading to them facing Jen and eventually Leofric.
