Acquisition
To trigger the conversation that begins this quest, you need to have had Arona in your party for a ghost encounter — Shades of the Past, Specter of the Wyld, the Spectral Smith encounter in the Glacial Rift, or the Minotaur Ghosts in the Tiran Temple. Before too long, Arona will interrupt your sleep to insist you find a way for her to fight ghosts.
Progress
You continue the quest by visiting Viviane with Arona in your party and choose Arona. Viviane marks a spot in the Old Forest, and if you wait at the spot you will encounter a Spirit Dire Wolf that you need to defeat. Losing causes a Bad End.
After slaying the spirit, you return to Viviane to collect Arona's upgrade.
Reward
"This," Viviane says, "is Nightfang. Every good magic weapon deserves a name. Take it."
You unlock Arona's Spirit Totem set and make your alpha/beta happy. Also, Viviane has a really funny bit of dialogue which you'll just be happy you read.
