Playing drums peacefully makes Jotun fight without ghosts. Playing Aggressively gives you horn of the tides after the fight. Wailing out annoys the giant and gives you same fight as aggresively but gives no different rewards than playing peacefully

Viviane is one of the companions that can help you with cauldrons. Being a mage probably helps too.
